Like most things in punk it's tough to pinpoint when exactly this change happened.In softcore, there's no penalty for dying. You die, you just go back. Hardcore, one death and you're done, which adds a fair bit if excitement and fear. It's a rush when you almost die and don't. You also build your character completely different; more defensively. I'm not a hardcore enjoyer, but I can see how it would feel lame to play ...
