While flint, agate, etc are 7 on Moh's hardness scale, obsidian is only 5. BTW stainless steel is also around 5 on the same scale. A good frizzen may actually be harder than obsidian. When I was studying this, we used a stainless steel watch back to test this.I am in the process of making my own stain for curly maple using nitric acid and distilled water in a 5/1 solution. Set the flint up properly the take the firearm to into a dark room no light. With no powder in the gun Trigger the action while observing for sparks. Assuming the flint is being held tightly so it doesn't move when it strikes the frizzen. If no sparks fly the frizzen is bad and would need replacing.I like the fact that they have a hole cross drilled horizontally in the area where the cap sits. These hole direct the blow back gases outward and help split the cap for easy removal. My other choice of nipples would be the Knight "Red Hot". Both nipples come in sizes to fit your rifles.
